| Sunday, 24 March, 2002, 07:11 GMT Tourists' minds on Hollioake The England side remember Ben Hollioake before play Andrew Caddick completed his second successive six-wicket haul but admitted that events off the field had overshadowed England's push to clinch victory over New Zealand. Caddick's six for 63 helped the tourists dismiss New Zealand for a lowly 218 after they had resumed on 70 for one. And by the close of the fourth day, the tourists had opened up a 246-run lead by reaching 184 for one.
But Caddick revealed that the one minute's silence at the start of the day in memory of Ben Hollioake upset the tourists to such an extent they took some time to settle down again. The England all-rounder died in a car crash in Australia on Saturday. "That minute's silence rocked the boys a little bit, but unfortunately cricket doesn't stop, the game continues and once we started concentrating on the cricket the game went forward," said Caddick. "We're not judged by what's been happening off the field, we're judged by what's happening on the field and you still have to be professional and you have to get on with the game." Caddick's performance also took him to within four wickets of claiming 200 Test wickets - a milestone he admitted he had targeted on his return to New Zealand. "I'll be very happy to get four more wickets and it will be a nice feeling to get 200," he admitted. "It would be a good club to be in and it was the one thing I really wanted to achieve on this tour." Black Cap coach Denis Aberhart bemoaned the fact that Christchurch-born Caddick had chosen to become a naturalised Englishman rather than stay in New Zealand all those years ago. "He's a big loss to New Zealand cricket," said Aberhart. "He's the one that got away and we'd love to have him bowling in our colours, but that's not going to happen." |
