![]() | NZ survive early scares ![]() News of Hollioake's reached England during the morning Second Test, Wellington, day three (stumps): New Zealand 70-1 v England 280 all out New Zealand's top order batsmen frustrated England's fielders as they reached 70 for one at the close of the third day in reply to the tourists' first innings 280 in Wellington. But events at the Basin Reserve were overshadowed by the news that one-day all-rounder Ben Hollioake had been killed in a car crash in Australia. Flags at the ground were lowered to half-mast and players on both sides wore black armbands after being informed of the tragic accident during the morning. And the England team management have requested that a minute's silence be observed before the start of Sunday's fourth day's play.
On the field of play, New Zealand second wicket pair Mark Richardson and Lou Vincent ground out an unbroken 54-run partnership from 28 overs. Richardson was unbeaten on 29 when bad light ended the day, and Vincent had survived 100 deliveries for his 30. Earlier, Ian Butler, in his second Test, finished with figures of four for 60 as the tourists slumped from 199 for four at lunch to be all out at tea. England captain Nasser Hussain top-scored with 66 and last-wicket pair James Foster and Matthew Hoggard added 30 runs in eight overs to frustate the home attack. Chances A dreary evening session was not without incident, though, as England missed two possible chances, and on two occasions were upset by umpires' decisions. Vincent gained a reprieve on three, when a catch off bat and pad, taken by Mark Ramprakash at short leg, was ruled not out by umpire Steve Dunne. And wicket-keeper Foster's celebrations for a catch off Vincent's hoisted bat was turned down, much to the disgust of skipper Nasser Hussain. Opener Matthew Horne was the man out, having gained a slight inside edge to a fuller delivery from Andrew Caddick for eight. Caddick's nine-over opening spell yielded just 10 runs. And spinner Ashley Giles was also miserly, having been brought on in just the eighth over, but looked unlikely to take a wicket as he generally bowled a negative line over the wicket. Disputed wicket Hussain and Ramprakash put on 58 for the fifth wicket, 25 of which came in five overs after lunch. But Ramprakash's dismissal for 24 began the collapse, waving outside off-stump to get an inside edge onto his stumps for 24.
And Ashley Giles, having already been caught off a Butler no ball, cut the youngster, in his second Test, straight to Craig McMillan at point. The key wicket, though, was that of Hussain, who could feel justifyably aggrieved by his dismissal off spinner Daniel Vettori. Hussain's was the middle wicket in a trio that fell in the space of three balls, marking a victory for the left-armer's ploy of bowling over the wicket into the rough. But television replays showed that the ball came off the England captain's armguard rather than his bat as it popped up for Nathan Astle at slip. Foster hit 25 from 45 deliveries, including a six over the cover boundary off Chris Drum, to end the innings unbeaten. Mark Butcher was dismissed for 47 and Graham Thorpe was also caught in the slips, as the tourists moved on from an overnight 92 for two. Butcher and Hussain extended their partnership for the third wicket to 70, before left-hander was beaten by extra bounce, edging Drum to Astle.
