Strauss hit out at England's fielding and early batting |
England captain Andrew Strauss said Bangladesh deserved their first victory over his side but was clear on where the hosts went wrong in Bristol. "We just weren't good enough. Simple as that," said Strauss after England were bowled out for 231 for a five-run defeat that levelled the series at 1-1. "Our fielding was sub-standard. Losing four wickets early was criminal. "But they defended that score exceptionally well, they were hungry and they thoroughly deserved victory." England were forced to use Ian Bell, batting at number 11 with a broken foot, after the batsman injured himself in the field while Bangladesh amassed a score of 236-7. | To beat them at home with all their preparation for the Ashes, it's a brilliant win Bangladesh coach Jamie Siddons |
"You don't want to have a situation where a guy with a broken foot is walking out in the last over," Strauss admitted. "Obviously we were one of our major bats down but these things happen. We should have had enough batting and nous to get over the line." Bell eventually came out - hobbling, heavily padded and with Eoin Morgan as a runner - in a last-ditch effort with Jonathan Trott, who was last man out for 94, still in at the other end. "We needed to get down to 10 or 15 to win before we even considered it," said Strauss. "It was a good effort but unfortunately we left Trotty with too much to do." | 606: DEBATE |
Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza admitted the team had been lifted by their first win in 247 days, spanning 14 one-day internationals and 10 in other forms of the game. "After 24 matches losing in a row, this dressing room had not really been happy," he said. "The dressing room is happy now. "We have been working hard in the nets and we hoped that it would come. "In the middle part of the innings we lost three or four wickets but apart from that we played very well." And Bangladesh's Australian coach, Jamie Siddons, was particularly pleased to have beaten a side he believes ranks high in world cricket. "It's unbelievable. I would have thought England were on top of the world and capable of beating everyone. "So to beat them at home with all their preparation for the Ashes, it's a brilliant win."
