Swann and Pietersen are both set to play key role in the winter Ashes series
England have rested Kevin Pietersen and Graeme Swann for the three-match one-day international series against Bangladesh starting on Thursday.
Pietersen suffered a thigh strain while fielding in the final match of the 3-2 series win against Australia.
He had to bat with a runner but was out for a duck and has been replaced by Warwickshire's Jonathan Trott.
Kent off-spinner James Tredwell has also been called into the squad with first-choice Swann given a break.
Pietersen, 30, suffered a left quadriceps strain just above his left knee in Saturday's 42-run defeat by Australia at Lord's and will undergo further assessment and a short rehabilitation period.
England national selector Geoff Miller, who revealed Pietersen would have been rested had he not been injured to keep him fresh for the Test series with Pakistan starting on 29 July and the Ashes in Australia beginning on 25 November, said of his leading batsman: "We know what his qualities are."
However, Pietersen has gone 16 one-day internationals without reaching fifty, a lean run stretching back to November 2008, and averages barely 18 in 11 matches since his return from Achilles tendon surgery last autumn.
"Everybody is concerned when a batter is not getting runs, similarly when a bowler is not getting wickets or not bowling well," Miller explained.
"But we know very well he is very capable of getting big runs, and they will be just round the corner."
Swann, 31, has been a constant figure in the England ranks since making his Test debut in India in December 2008, when he took two wickets in his first over.
"Graeme Swann has been involved in all forms of the game for some time now and this forthcoming period has been identified as the best opportunity to ensure he has a suitable break ahead of a demanding schedule this summer and during the winter," Miller said.
"It's unfortunate that Kevin Pietersen has suffered an injury and although we'll know the full extent in due course it looks like he'll be able to make a full recovery very quickly."
Regarding the series against the Australians, where England lost the final two matches, Miller added: "There was a lot to like about the cricket we played against Australia and the team will be looking to build on this against Bangladesh."
Trott, who made a duck on his one-day international debut against Ireland last year, scored two half centuries in the series in South Africa during the winter but was not part of the squad to face the Australians.
He reminded the selectors of his run-scoring ability, however, with a fine 118 to help the England Lions beat West Indies A last Tuesday.
Tredwell, 28, made his international debut in Bangladesh in March, taking 2-99 and 4-82 as England won the second Test in Mirpur by nine wickets.
He also played a solitary ODI on that tour, recording 0-52 from 10 overs in Dhaka.
"James Tredwell and Jonathan Trott have previously been involved with the England one-day set up and will be excellent additions to the full England squad from the England Lions," Miller added.
"Both have been in good form for the Lions and will relish the opportunity to make their mark in limited overs at the top level."
Trott played for the Lions against West Indies A at Worcester on Sunday but lasted only four balls and was dismissed for one.
Meanwhile, Yorkshire seamer Ajmal Shahzad retains his place in the squad in preference to Nottinghamshire left-armer Ryan Sidebottom.
England have played 11 one-day internationals against Bangladesh, the first of which was in 2000, and have a 100% winning record thus far.
