England Lions won their opening match of the one-day tri-series, beating West Indies A by five wickets. Ajmal Shahzad had captain Devon Smith caught behind with the first ball of the match at Northampton, and the Windies were soon struggling at 46-3. But Kirk Edwards hit 147 from 132 balls to help set a total of 279-6. Jonathan Trott (118) led the chase, adding 113 with captain Alastair Cook (71) and 82 with Ian Bell (44) as the Lions won it with eight balls to spare. With the West Indian batting crumbling around him it was an impressive performance from 25-year-old Barbadian Edwards, who was at the crease for almost three hours and struck 18 fours and three sixes. His first half-century took 68 balls before he accelerated to score his next 50 in 35 deliveries. Shahzad captured an economical 2-25 from his 10 overs and will rejoin the senior squad along with Bell ahead of Wednesday's fourth one-day international against Australia at The Oval. | 606: DEBATE |
It was two men not considered for the one-day squad, Trott and Cook, who impressed with a fine partnership compiled in 22.2 overs. Cook reached his fifty in 52 balls and hit a six in his 71 from 81 deliveries, while Trott had eight boundaries on his way to a half century. When Bell edged to the wicketkeeper, 61 were still needed but Trott continued calmly, his century arriving from 102 balls. Ravi Bopara contributed a six and a four in his swift 18 and though both he and Trott departed before the end, the Lions were able to secure a victory going into their second match against India A at Grace Road, Leicester, on Thursday. However, Lions paceman Sajid Mahmood had a day to forget - being hit for 79 runs in 10 wicketless overs, while he received a reprimand from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) after being reported by the umpires for a Level One breach of the ECB's disciplinary code (abuse of cricket ground, equipment or fixtures/fittings).
