Kevin O'Brien's 37 runs helped prevent Irish batting embarrassment |
West Indies A completed a 2-0 win over Ireland in the one-day series at Stormont after clinching a comfortable eight-wicket success on Friday. Andrew Poynter (64), Andrew White (57) and Kevin O'Brien (37) steadied Ireland after the home side lost early wickets. But the tail failed to wag as the Irish were out for 217 after 46 overs. Captain Devon Smith hit 114 and Andre Fletcher was 81 not out as the West Indies side reached their target after only 39 overs. Gary Wilson, Paul Stirling and Rory McCann all departed cheaply to leave the Irish struggling on 29-3. Kevin O'Brien and Poynter then put on 44 for the fourth wicket before O'Brien's departure. Poynter and White produced an 88-run partnership for the fifth wicket but the last five wickets went for only 56 runs as Ireland were bowled out at the start of the 47th over. Phil Eaglestone came in for some particularly heavy punishment as he finished with figures of 1-73 from 8.2 overs although he did take the Smith's wicket. Albert van der Merwe claimed the other wicket but the Windies were never under any serious threat as they reached their target in the 39th over.
