Shah admits Test call-up surprise

Owais Shah
Londoner Shah made his England debut in 2001

Batsman Owais Shah has admitted his surprise at being named in the 15-man England squad for the Test series against India in December.

The Middlesex right hander told BBC London 94.9: "I wasn't expecting it, I was very surprised but at the same time I'm very pleased I've been selected.

"At times you just have to be patient and keep performing."

The 29-year-old was picked ahead of Ravi Bopara following the news that Michael Vaughan will be absent.

He added: "If I do get an opportunity to play a Test match for England hopefully I can perform and take the opportunity."

Shah has never managed to cement a place in the England team but has appeared on and off since his debut in 2001.
