Coach Gibson tempted by England

Ottis Gibson
Ottis Gibson enjoyed a phenomenal 2007 season for Durham

Durham paceman Ottis Gibson says he would consider becoming England's bowling consultant if offered the job.

The 38-year-old is currently filling the role on a temporary basis and said: "If it's offered to me permanently I'll have to think about it.

"At the moment, all I am thinking about is the next two weeks, the next four one-dayers, and then I'm contracted for the Test series as well."

Barbados-born Gibson is also keen on joining the West Indies set-up.

David Moore is in charge of the Windies on a temporary basis until 30 November and could be replaced depending on the team's results up until then.

Gibson said: "There's a lot to consider, but right here right now I'm in Sri Lanka and I'm really enjoying working with the bowlers England have got and helping us continue to improve.

"Durham know the situation. I've signed a contract to play with Durham but they also know I've had other interest.

"The last six months have been hectic with a lot going on."

Allan Donald filled the role until recently, working with bowling coach Kevin Shine, but he did not want to continue because of family reasons, and Durham fear Gibson will be offered the job by England.

Coach Geoff Cook told BBC Radio Newcastle: "I am sure if Ottis does a good job in Sri Lanka they will look at employing him on a permanent basis.

"But I hope from Durham's point of view that he can have one final season."

The England and Wales Cricket Board plans to discuss the position with Gibson at Christmas, ahead of the tour to New Zealand which is swiftly followed by the 2008 county season.

Gibson had an extraordinary season leading the Durham attack as the county finished runners-up in the County Championship.

They also won the Friends Provident Trophy at Lord's and gained promotion to Division One of the Pro40 competition.

He took 80 Championship wickets - including 10 in a single innings - and contributed 723 runs across all competitions, which earned him a stack of awards.

Cook said: "It will never be as good as this season was for him, but if he could come back and have one last season and get a definite finish to his career I am sure he would appreciate that."

A club spokesman told BBC Sport: "Ottis has been offered a deal and we are waiting for him to make his mind up. We appreciate there might be other offers."
