England v West Indies 1st ODI

England celebrate
Paul Collingwood is swamped by his players following England's win
Captain Paul Collingwood lauded bowling coach Allan Donald following England's 79-run win over West Indies in the first one-day international.

Pacemen Stuart Broad, James Anderson and Liam Plunkett shared seven wickets as West Indies were all out for 146.

"AD is a very passionate guy and speaks his mind, which is fantastic, because he has a hell of a lot of knowledge.

"It shows when they are all going out there with aggression and hitting the bat hard," said Collingwood.

"Jimmy and Liam started off really well and then for Broady to come on and keep that same intensity and pressure on the batsmen was great for such a young guy. There is not a lot of experience from Plunkett and Broad but they were magnificent.

"Broady has got great character, a great head on his shoulders, is a lot more mature than his age, but all the bowlers did themselves credit.

"To have 225 on the board is not a massive total but to keep them down to 145-150 is a top effort."

The challenge now is to take that level into the next match and for us to continue to improve

Donald was appointed in May, but his agreement with the England and Wales Cricket Board only lasts for the two remaining one-dayers against West Indies.

And Collingwood would clearly be keen for the former South Africa Test star to stay on for the forthcoming series against India, who have a far stronger batting line-up.

"Will Donald continue with England? It's not my decision whether he stays or goes but he has given us a lot of help which is great for all the bowlers," he commented.

Collingwood was delighted to lead England to a comfortable win in his limited overs international as captain after being appointed to try and improve performance following a dismal World Cup campaign.

"It's been a good day. I thought the batsmen did well to adapt to the conditions and then the bowlers came out and were magnificent. My job as captain was made easy by the players and I want us to take this on," he said.

England only managed 12 boundaries in overcast conditions, but Collingwood praised his batsmen for their approach.

"What I liked was our aggression and intensity throughout. It didn't always come off with the bat, but the intent was there.

"In the end, with the ball still nibbling around in the middle overs, it became clear that it wasn't going to a big-scoring wicket, so we had to battle.

"That's what we did and then the bowlers came out, put the West Indies under pressure with tight lines and good pace and we restricted them well.

"The challenge now is to take that level into the next match and for us to continue to improve."
