England v West Indies 2nd Twenty20

Paul Collingwood
Collingwood hit 27 from 24 deliveries
Skipper Paul Collingwood said his England side had learned their lesson from Thursday's Twenty20 defeat after squaring the series on Friday.

Owais Shah starred with a well-paced 55 not out as England beat West Indies by five wickets at the Oval.

"It was a good performance, nice to get a win under our belts. We learned a lot from Thursday night," said Collingwood.

"We've only been together for a week and have done a lot of talking, but you learn the most out in the middle."

The Durham all-rounder, who scored 27 and took two wickets, added: "The bowlers bowled as a unit and came out and showed they had learned a lot, with slower balls and death balls.

"We're all learning, including myself. It was much better and to knock a total off like that shows we can bat in depth.

"Right from the start we have shown a lot of enthusiasm. Our work-rate has been second to none and hopefully we'll get more results like this because of that.

"There's a lot of belief and a lot of talent out there and it looks good for the future."

Man-of-the-match Shah, who sealed England's victory, said: "I've been waiting for an opportunity for a long time and I took it.

"I was cross that I didn't play myself in and make the most of my chance on Thursday.

"Dimitri [Mascarenhas, who scored 18 not out] kept his cool and kept me going and we backed ourselves and didn't rush.

"I've played most of my cricket at the top of the order for Middlesex, but I'll bat number 11 if England want me to play there and that's how I can cement a place in the team."

West Indies skipper Chris Gayle insisted his side's morale was still high as the teams prepare for a three-match series in the 50-over version of the game, beginning at Lord's on Sunday.

"Overall it has helped us a lot playing these two Twenty20 games and they will make a big difference going into the first one-day game on Sunday," he said.

"I thought the guys' preparation was really good leading into these games and hopefully the guys can make the most out of this opportunity and we're now looking forward to Lord's."
