The 20-year-old has been added to the squad after Jon Lewis (Achilles) and Chris Tremlett (back) were forced to fly back home with injuries.

Broad has been training at a bowling academy in Madras (Chennai) and is expected to arrive on Thursday.

England meet Australia in the first match of the best-of-three finals at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday.

Coach Duncan Fletcher said he was not willing to risk Lewis and Tremlett ahead of next month's World Cup.

"Chris Tremlett has a back injury and he would be in some pain if he took part in any of the finals," Fletcher explained.

"It is difficult to say exactly what Jon Lewis's injury is. It is around the Achilles area, but they will have a good look at it."

Broad was first brought into the England one-day side last summer against Pakistan.

Although he is unlikely to play on Friday, the tall youngster could feature in Sunday's second game in Sydney, with Fletcher keen to see him in action before the World Cup.

"He's fit and ready to go. Friday night would be pretty tricky but he might have to play if one of the bowlers falls over," the coach added.

"And if we want to go with four seamers on Sunday - that Sydney wicket has shown a preference for seam bowling - we would have to look at him.

"If there's a slight chance that Lewis is a problem and Anderson doesn't come right we've got to look at bowlers and he's bowled well for us in the one-day scenario.

"If he did have a game it would be an advantage to us."

Broad, who was with the England academy squad in Perth before flying out to India, added: "It's a great chance, I'm fully prepared and excited about the challenge.

"I played over in Perth before Christmas, I'm used to the conditions and excited about taking on Australia.
