Flintoff 'should be ODI captain'

I have never met a better bloke playing cricket on the opposition side
Dean Jones on Flintoff
Former Australia batsman Dean Jones believes Andrew Flintoff should be made England's permanent one-day captain.

Flintoff has been in charge on the India tour since Michael Vaughan returned home in late February.

"Vaughan is a very good player who has done a great job as Test captain but he has always got injury concerns," Jones told BBC Five Live.

"I think it is time to name Freddy as one-day captain. He is one guy who has not dropped his performance one bit."

Jones believes the ideal scenario would be a captain who performs the role in Test cricket and one-day internationals.

England have lost the one-day series - 4-0 with two matches to go - in India, having shown tremendous character to level the Test series at 1-1.

"They need to learn some lessons from their experiences there, because they are going to go home with their tails between their legs after the one-dayers," Jones said.

"But Freddie has handled everything beautifully. I love the way he goes about it. He has handled the captaincy really well, particularly at Mumbai when they levelled the Test series.

"I don't think he has the right cattle in India - the players don't seem to be able to get their heads around playing one-dayers there.

"But I think he is the answer to the captaincy in one-dayers. The players will get behind him and move on from here."

Flintoff was named Wisden's Leading Cricketer of the World for 2005 on Tuesday.

"I am so happy for him," Jones added. "I have never met a better bloke playing cricket on the opposition side.

"He is such a big character, full of life and puts bums on seats. Good things happen to good people."
