England captain Michael Vaughan says a back-to-basics approach brought him his second century in the first Test against West Indies.

"I spent three days with Duncan Fletcher and we hit a lot of balls and talked about batting," said Vaughan after hitting 101 on day four.

"In the one-day series I had five fails and wasn't hitting as many balls as I would have liked in practice.

"It was back to basics, practice very hard and fortunately it's paid off."

Vaughan became only the ninth England batsman to score two centuries in the same match, and the third batsman from any country to do so at Lord's.

He eventually declared England's innings on 325-5 with 34 over remaining in the day.

"It's still a decent wicket, so we'll have to be at our best to put them under pressure," said Vaughan.

"But we go three key wickets so we're in a good position."

West Indies opener Chris Gayle admitted his side faced a difficult task to save the game.

His dismissal for 81 was a big blow to their chances and much will depend on how Brian Lara and Shivnarine Chanderpaul stay together on the final day.

"Hopefully the captain and Shiv can taken it through the first sessionand we'll see what happens after that," said Gayle.

"It's still a good pitch to bat on but it won't be easy to score on with the ball keeping a bit low and Ashley Giles has the rough to his advantage as well."

Gayle was disappointed to miss out on a century which would have meant his name being put on the Lord's honours board.

"I'm disappointed whenever I get out, it doesn't matter which ground it is but this is a special one and I'd love to be up there."
