Flintoff will be keen to make up for his failure with the bat |
England received a welcome boost on the second day of the Lord's Test with the news that Andrew Flintoff had been given the all-clear to bowl. It was expected he would play as a specialist batsman only against West Indies because of an ankle injury.
But England and Wales Cricket Board medical officer Dr Peter Gregory said: "Andrew's making good progress."
He added: "Provided he remains pain free, he'll be able to bowl for England in this Test."
Flintoff's problem was first revealed last month and he was initially left out of the squad for the triangular NatWest Series, but England's poor form prompted the selectors to recall him as a batsman.
He subsequently played two Twenty20 Cup games for Lancashire as a batsman.
The injury is common among sporstmen and women and also, according to Flintoff's specialist, among ballet dancers.
"An operation is a last resort. After an operation there is a rehabilitation period and a chance that it could make things worse," Dr Gregory said earlier this week.
"There are people who've had an operation for this and done well and others who haven't.
