Butcher was suffering from whiplash and a thigh strain |
England batsman Mark Butcher has been ruled out of the second Test against West Indies after aggravating a thigh injury. The 31-year-old missed the opening match at Lord's after suffering whiplash in a car accident.
But he had already been suffering from a thigh injury and aggravated it while lifting a box at his home on Sunday.
Butcher's absence means Rob Key will keep his place after scoring 221 in the first innings at Lord's.
England have named a 12-man squad for the second Test, which starts on Thursday.
"When Butcher is fit, we will sit down and see how the team is playing and how he is playing.
"It is a nice problem to have. We have selected the same squad because he was unavailable, so we did not come to that bridge," said chairman of selectors David Graveney.
Lancashire paceman James Anderson is again included and will be hoping for a chance having last played a Test since the tour to Sri Lanka last December.
Simon Jones only took one wicket at Lord's and his line was wayward on the final day, but the selectors may decide to stick with an unchanged XI.
West Indies captain Brian Lara said fast bowler Corey Collymore was likely to play at Edgbaston because of his "experience".
Collymore, who was due to arrive in England on Monday as a replacement for the injured Ravi Rampaul, toured England in 2000 and played for Warwickshire last summer.
However, Lara did not give further details of West Indies' Edgbaston line-up, leaving it to the selectors.
England squad: M Vaughan (capt)< M Trescothick, A Strauss, R Key, G Thorpe, A Flintoff, G Jones (wkt), A Giles, M Hoggard, S Jones, S Harmison, J Anderson.
