The Headingley victory was a great achievement because we did not look in particularly good shape at the end of the second day's play.
We had bowled well in patches in New Zealand's first innings without sustaining pressure so they ended up with a good total for Headingley.
It all meant that on Saturday we were a bit up against it but the way our openers set about batting relaxed us a lot and it must have frustrated the Kiwis.
What was imperative on Sunday was to get a lead in the first innings. Geraint Jones played brilliantly to score his first hundred to give us that lead and then it was our turn to bowl again.
It was good to be in the thick of the action at Headingley |
Headingley is a very weird pitch to bowl on.
It can be flat for 20 overs and then all of a sudden things start to happen. You get one wicket, the next batsman comes in and life suddenly looks tough for batsmen.
The other issue is that the older ball does a lot more. It grips a lot more and doesn't skid off the surface like it does when it's new.
I was pleased to take four wickets in the second innings to play a big hand in bowling them out for 161.
I think the ball was a reversing a little bit. I was definitely trying to bowl away swingers but the ball was reversing.
We had a plan to bowl straight and I got two batsmen out lbw. We felt there was no point bowling outside off stump because they were just going to fling the bat at anything with a bit of width.
Now we are in Nottingham and it would be nice to win 3-0.
It's what we'll be after but I'm sure New Zealand will regroup, get the cavalry together and come back fighting hard. They won't want to lose 3-0.
They are going to have to scour the country a bit to get 11 fit players. They won't be first-choice players but they will be out to prove a point.
Now we want to taste more champagne at Trent Bridge! |
Some of them will see it as their big chance - they will have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
They will try to make a name for themselves and it could be very dangerous if we just rock up thinking they are second-string players. We will have to treat them with respect.
James Anderson will be back and my feeling is he will play.
We have seen what a special talent he is and it's good for English cricket to have someone like that around.
At times it's been disappointing and very frustrating for him but it's great for England to have quality players to choose from.
Martin Saggers bowled well at Headingley and he certainly did nothing wrong in his first Test at Chittagong, but James is a contracted player.
It will be the last Test for Chris Cairns. He has been a very exciting all-rounder and is at the top of the sixes column in Test cricket.
He hits the ball very hard as a bowler he's got some vital wickets for New Zealand at vital times.
He is going to be a big loss for them.
