Hoggard took the last two wickets to fall in the Kiwi innings |
Matthew Hoggard, who took his 100th wicket on the second day of the final Test, said he was looking forward to batting with Graham Thorpe. Nightwatchman Hoggard will resume with Thorpe as England, at 225-5, try to get as close as possible to New Zealand's first innings score of 384.
The Yorkshireman said: "I am going to entertain people by trying to stay there as long as possible.
"Last time I played here I got my highest Test score of 32."
On that occasion, Hoggard helped Craig White reach a century and on Saturday his job his to accompany the established batsman, Thorpe. Hoggard said: "Hopefully we can get Thorpey up there and past 100 and get somewhere near their score to be in the game.
"We are batting last and this pitch is going to deteriorate so we are going to have to bat really well.
"We still have Geraint Jones and Ashley Giles who can bat, so it's up to me to stay in with Thorpey and the rest to score some runs."
Hoggard became the 37th England bowler to take 100 Test wickets when he had Kyle Mills caught behind for a duck.
"You always get a little bit twitchy," he said after a long wait to achieve the landmark dismissal.
"I thought Steve Harmison was going to overtake me the way he was catching me up!"
