Strauss replaces Hussain
A Strauss
Strauss could replace Michael Vaughan at the top of the order
Andrew Strauss has been confirmed as Nasser Hussain's England replacement for this week's second Test against New Zealand at Headingley.

Captain Michael Vaughan returns from a knee injury but could allow Strauss to open with Marcus Trescothick.

Paul Collingwood could play his first Test in England if the hosts decide to go without spinner Ashley Giles.

Pace bowler James Anderson again makes up a squad of 13, but is unlikely to oust Matthew Hoggard on home soil.

Vaughan is expected to prove his fitness in a one-day match for Yorkshire against Scotland on Monday.

Chairman of selectors David Graveney said it will be up to Vaughan and coach Duncan Fletcher to choose who opens the batting.

Vaughan could drop down to four in the order with Strauss continuing a combination with Marcus Trescothick that brought his century on debut.

"Michael Vaughan is the captain of England and it is his responsibility to decide the batting line-up," Graveney told BBC Five Live.

"We as selectors have given our view but it is down to Michael Vaughan and Duncan Fletcher to decide."

Hussain retired from all cricket on Thursday, three days after hitting a century to win the opening match of the series by seven wickets.

"If you want a scrap you need Nasser Hussain," Graveney added.

"He has introduced a level of passion in playing for England that was perhaps missing in the past.

"You hope players of his stature will have a stage to leave rather than being at the whims of selectors and he has had his stage."

It is possible that a compromise could be reached, with Vaughan going to three and Mark Butcher moving down to number four
England stuck with their establish squad despite the claims of in-form county batsmen Rob Key and Ian Bell.

Graveney admitted: "It would have been an interesting selection meeting if [Hussain] had still been available.

"It's the first time in a while lots of players have been knocking on the door and that poses some good problems for the selectors."

The second and third Tests are played back-to-back, with the next match starting at Trent Bridge a week on Thursday, so there will be little chance to change the squad.

England squad: MP Vaughan (capt, Yorkshire), ME Trescothick (Somerset), AJ Strauss (Middlesex), MA Butcher (Surrey), PD Collingwood (Durham), GP Thorpe (Surrey), A Flintoff (Lancashire), GO Jones (wkt, Kent), AF Giles (Warwickshire), JM Anderson (Lancashire), MJ Hoggard (Yorkshire), SJ Harmison (Durham), SP Jones (Glamorgan).
