The guessing game about Michael Vaughan's batting position in the second Test will continue until England meet at Headingley this week.
Vaughan scores quickly enough to adapt to a move |
David Graveney, the chairman of selectors, revealed that it will be a decision for the captain and coach - Duncan Fletcher - to make, although he did say the selectors had given their view. And he might have shown his hand when he stated that being captain of England is a huge responsibility, suggesting that a move to number four might ease the burden a little.
But opening batsmen like going in first - doing battle with the fast bowlers in full cry is a situation certain batsman feed off - and Vaughan averages very nearly 50 in his 58 innings in that position.
Interestingly, he has batted at four only eight times, and averaged 26 there, but his average as captain is only 33, and that might very well be the spur to move into the middle order.
Because he is such a positive batsman, Vaughan is well suited for the move.
Other captain/openers - Mike Atherton for example - would not have been so prolific simply because of the pace at which you need to bat there.

It is possible that a compromise could be reached, with Vaughan going to three and Mark Butcher moving down to number four. But that would be a mistake because Butcher has been, albeit quietly, very successful batting after the fall of the first wicket this year.
So the debate will rumble on for a while - and so will the discussion about the final make-up of the team.
The weathermen are predicting cloudy skies at Headingley for Thursday morning, with a slight westerly breeze.
These are precisely the conditions that captains dread as they toss the coin, and it might very well be that Paul Collingwood wins his first home cap as a result.
Ashley Giles rediscovered a little of his lost confidence in the second innings at Lord's, but the odds are England will need their extra batting at Leeds.
Collingwood's gentle medium-pacers might be useful if the forecast proves to be accurate.
