Saggers shines in the gloom
Second Test, Headingley, day one (stumps):
New Zealand 41-1 v England

Martin Saggers

Martin Saggers took a wicket with his first ball on a rain-hit opening day of the second Test against New Zealand.

The Kiwis reached 41-1 in the 19 overs that were possible at Headingley after rain caused two interruptions and bad light brought an early close.

Saggers, playing his second Test after replacing the injured Simon Jones, bowled Mark Richardson for 13.

Michael Papps was unbeaten on 24 after England dropped two catches which would have put more pressure on the Kiwis.

Saggers, whose only previous appearance came against Bangladesh in the winter, was included after Jones was ruled out of the rest of the series with a foot injury.

New Zealand added Michael Papps to the side which lost at Lord's, with the injured Craig McMillan missing out and Jacob Oram playing as a batsman.

The day started two hours late after the first session was washed out.

England opened with Yorkshire swing bowler Matthew Hoggard, but he failed to make an initial impression.

Papps rode his luck during the hour of play between rain breaks, with gully Mark Butcher squandering a half-chance off Steve Harmison and Graham Thorpe inexcusably letting Hoggard down at third slip.

In between the drops, Richardson was not so lucky.

Saggers, replacing Harmison, pitched on a length that provoked the left-hander into a rare drive, swung inwards and found the inside edge en route to the stumps.

Barely 10 minutes passed before showers returned, precluding play for a further 150 minutes.

When play did resume, Saggers and Hoggard swung the ball hugely in one over each, Papps unknowingly edging the former through a stacked slip cordon for four.

It was no surprise when the batsmen accepted the umpires' offer to leave the field for bad light.

Better weather is expected for the remaining four days, with an hour's extra play scheduled for each of them.
