England v India: Action as it happened
England 181 all out (48.2 overs) lost to India 204 all out (49.3 overs) by 23 runs

India gained a consolation 23-run win over England at Lord's but the NatWest Challenge went to the hosts 2-1.

In a thrilling match before a raucous crowd, England recovered from 62-6 thanks to a stand of 92 between Michael Vaughan (74) and Ashley Giles (39).

But both men fell to Harbhajan Singh in the 44th over to seal England's fate.

Earlier Steve Harmison took a career-best haul of 4-22, including captain Sourav Ganguly for 90, as India were bowled out for just 204.

Latest action:

49th over: With 12 balls remaining, England's last wicket pair need 25 more to win. Harmison gets one closer before Nehra rips out Gough's leg stump to trigger mass celebrations from a partisan crowd.
England 181 all out (Gough 10)

48th over: India turn back to pace in the form of Pathan. Harmison lives dangerously popping a slower ball over the batsman's head.

47th over: Wharf tries to carve Yuvraj on the leg side but gets a leading edge high in the air for Karthik to collect.
England 166-9 (Wharf 9)

Gough slog-sweeps into the grandstand for six. Harmison gets off the mark with a swept single.

46th over: Sehwag replaces Harbhajan. Wharf comes down the wicket and smashes the spinner into the pavilion for six. Umpire Hair turns down an appeal for a catch, ruling a wide.

45th over: Gough gets off the mark with a paddle shot against Yuvraj.

44th over: Vaughan comes down the wicket to Harbhajan and misses with a flick. Wicket-keeper Karthik collects a delivery on leg side and leaps to remove the stumps with Vaughan just short. The TV umpire confirms the decision and Lord's erupts.
England 155-8 (Vaughan 74)

44th over: Giles drives at a full toss from Harbhajan and the spinner collects a simple catch. He celebrates by putting a finger to his lips to try to quiet a baying crowd.
England 154-7 (Giles 39)

Wharf gets his international career off the mark with a single to mid-off.

43rd over: Yuvraj allows just three off the over as neither Giles nor Vaughan are able to connect with drives.

42nd over: Vaughan is extremely lucky to still be there after he got a massive slice into the air. It landed innoculously in the end.

41st over: Yuvraj's spin looks to be doing little, but England can't quite make the poor deliveries count. Giles survives a stumping appeal in the process.

40th over: Vaughan and Giles go into the over knowing they need to rile Harbhajan. Giles picks up three off one delivery with a massive slog into the outfield.

39th over: Yuvrav starts with four dot balls before Vaughan charges down for another boundary to extra cover.

38th over: Harbhajan caresses and cajoles the ball in order to flumox England's men at the crease. He succeeds in keeping them pinned down.

37th over: Yuvrav Singh is brought into proceedings for the first time. A reasonably tight over from the spinner

36th over: Vaughan glides Sehwag's opener to extra-cover for four - a textbook shot - the first of seven runs from the over.

35th over: Vaughan and Giles run well to pick up three runs from the first ball of Pathan's second spell. They then add another three from the last delivery.

34th over: England will have to up the tempo soon, with the rate required now at five-and-a-half runs an over.

33rd over: A half-hearted lbw appeal barely gets the attention of the umpire. Giles then adds a four to fine leg for the 50-partnership. Unbeaten on 24, he's just notched up his best score in one-day international cricket.

32nd over: Vaughan nearly drags the ball onto his stumps before picking up his eighth one-day international 50.

31st over: The singles keep coming from the bat. Vaughan moves on to 49 not out.

30th over: Sehwag keeps the runs to a minimum with his second over.

29th over: England finally edge past the 100-run mark as Vaughan gets ever nearer to a personal half-century.

28th over: Harbhajan has to make way for Sehwag. The only hairy moment of his first over sees Giles rather ambitiously going for a single that was never there. He turns back in time.

27th over: Vaughan shows his class as he clips the ball through mid-on to the boundary rope.

26th over: Giles reads Harbhajan pretty well but fails to get a run off the over.

25th over: India are a little unlucky not to get rid of Giles when a reasonable lbw plea from Kumble is rejected.

24th over: Giles produces a delightful sweep shot to clear Kaif and send the ball to the square-leg boundary.

23rd over: Kumble looks livid as Karthik drops a thick edge from Vaughan.

22nd over: The catchers close in on Ashley Giles for Harbhajan's latest over. England's spinner survives the test so far and even manages a four to fine leg in the process.

21st over: Vaughan keeps his runs ticking over, the only England batsman seemingly unfazed by India's bowlers.

20th over: Sehwag takes a super diving catch at mid-on as Jones tries to hit across it. A wicket for Harbhajan Singh.
England 62-6 (Jones 10)

19th over: Jones has clearly decided to go for it. He half-volleys Kumble for four to mid-off.

18th over: Vaughan nudges one away.

17th over: The appeals are going in left, right and centre now. But it fails to bother umpire Jeremy Lloyds. Less than a minute later, Geraint Jones sweeps the ball to the square-leg boundary for six.

16th over: India are going for a spin double act now as Harbhajan Singh gets his spell going. It works as Collingwood is run out in breathtaking fashion by Mohammad Kaif at short leg as he tries to come down the wicket.
England 48-5 (Collingwood 4)

15th over: Anil Kumble starts unleashing his array of leg breakers. Collingwood comes down the crease to him but can't halt a maiden.

14th over: The touch that seems to have been missing from Vaughan in recent one-dayers looks to be back... for the most part.

13th over: Ganguly opts to keep with both Pathan and Nehra for now. But surely he'll turn to his spin attack before too long.

12th over: Vaughan edges the ball but it falls just short of the slip cordon and goes for four.

11th over: Two off that over for England.

10th over: England's nerves are further jangled as Nehra appeals for lbw against Collingwood. The Durham all-rounder is lucky to escape. As the over ticks on, Vaughan converts another boundary - the first for six overs.

9th over: Pathan's appeal for lbw against McGrath is turned down. But he succeeds with a second appeal moments later - a mightily close shout.
England 29-4 (McGrath 2)

8th over: Vaughan and Anthony McGrath now desperately need to steady the ship for England. Nehra's maiden - the first of the match - keeps the pressure on them.

7th over: England are in desperate trouble now as Strauss joins Trescothick and Solanki in the pavilion - trapped lbw by Irfan Pathan.
England 27-3 (Strauss 2)

6th over: Vaughan nervously slashes at a delivery verging on a wide. He just avoids nicking it.

5th over: Andrew Strauss joins his captain at the crease and gets off the mark with two runs.

4th over: Solanki gets himself in a tangle and just survives an lbw appeal but makes amends with a boundary the next ball. But two deliveries later he produces a massive top edge off Nehra to Harbhajan Singh.
England 22-2 (Solanki 9)

3rd over: Dare English supporters say it but Vaughan looks in good form. He hits his third boundary, spearing Pathan through the covers.

2nd over: Vaughan responds to criticism over his poor form with back-to-back fours.

Ashish Nehra gets some good movement off the seam with his opening delivery. And with his second Marcus Trescotchick edges it to VVS Laxman in the slips.
England 5-1 (Trescothick 1)

1st over: Ifran Pathan opens the bowling for India. Vikram Solanki starts well with a fine boundary off the back foot.

1458 BST: England come back out to try and catch India's total.

INNINGS BREAK

50th over: Wharf goes head-to-head with Pathan and Ashish Nehra for the last six balls. Wharf wins that tussle as he tears out Pathan's leg stump.
India 204 all out (Pathan 14)

49th over: India benefit from overthrows after the ball hits Pathan's bat. Gough squares up to him to air his displeasure at the move.

Gough takes his wicket tally to 201 when Kumble lifts it high and into the hands of Wharf.
India 195-9 (Kumble 5)

48th over: Irfan Pathan and Anil Kumble try to make something of the game in its dying moments. Singles are all they can manage off Wharf.

47th over: Gough produces another solid over.

46th over: Harmison gets his fourth wicket when the remaining danger man Dravid slices it to Collingwood. He finishes with figures of 4-22.
India 184-8 (Dravid 52)

45th over: Darren Gough picks up his 200th one-day international wicket when Vaughan catches Harbhajan Singh - the first ball he faced.
India 182-7 (Harbhajan Singh 0)

44th over: The superbly economical Harmison comes back to bowl and picks up his third wicket when Karthik edges to Jones.
India 181-6 (Karthik 1)

43rd over: Dravid reaches his half-century. Mind you, it's not been the most attractive innings.

42nd over: Giles appeals for lbw by Dinesh Karthik but it's nowhere near. He completes his 10 overs with figures of 1-43.

41st over: Vaughan has a quick word with Wharf after the errors of his last over. It does the trick. With his last delivery, he has Yuvraj Singh caught by Giles.
India 170-4 (Yuvraj 9)

40th over: Dravid finally opens up and reverses in style to send Giles' third delivery to the boundary.

39th over: Wharf takes over after Harmison's early histrionics but some poor bowling is picked on by the Indians, who score 13 off the over.

38th over: Dravid looks ill at ease without Ganguly but still picks up a few singles.

37th over: Ganguly is out, 10 runs short of his century. He tries to smack Harmison to the boundary, but is caught by Vaughan.
India 141-4 (Ganguly 90)

36th over: Once more Ganguly sets Indian pulses racing when he gets off the block with a run barely in the offing. Dravid sensibly sends him back.

35th over: Harmison comes on for his second spell and concedes just one. There is still uncertainty in the Indian running - probably England's best chance for a wicket.

34th over: Vaughan opts for spin again - lobbing the ball to Giles. The Warwickshire left-armer has a mini-lbw appeal, which is turned down.

33rd over: Gough nicely changes his pace and concedes just two runs.

32nd over: Ganguly gives himself acres of space and unleashes a trademark four over mid-off. He follows it with a six straight down the ground.

31st over: Gough is brought back into the fray. With it comes another Indian running stutter. This time Dravid is to blame, but he makes it back in time.

30th over: Collingwood continues with the ball in hand, as Ganguly moves to 72 not out.

29th over: Ganguly is on the offensive once more. He pulls Vaughan to the boundary again.

28th over: The confidence is building for both Dravid and Ganguly, who have already passed the half-century mark for their partnership.

27th over: The crowd comes to life as Ganguly swats Vaughan comfortably into the grandstand for six. Up comes the 100 moments later.

26th over: The ones and twos keep on flowing nicely for Dravid and Ganguly, but it's not enough to majorly concern Collingwood, the bowler, or his team-mates.

25th over: The energy of the game has briefly faded as India try to put together their first partnership of note and Vaughan conjures up what he can to keep their score low.

24th over: Paul Collingwood is the sixth English bowler brought into the attack. His medium pace keeps the runs in check.

23rd over: An eventful over. Ganguly steers the ball to the legside for his half-century and then survives a half-hearted lbw appeal from Vaughan.

22nd over: Some sloppy fielding sees India go to 77-3.

21st over: Vaughan goes for a bit of dual-spin action - a good chance for him to turn his arm ahead of the Champions Trophy. His off-breaks go for two runs.

20th over: Ganguly nearly plays his part in a second run out. Jones whips off the bails of the incoming Dravid, but the Indian batsman is easily in.

19th over: Dravid and Ganguly try to add ferocity to their batting but some solid bowling by Wharf curtails their efforts... for now.

18th over: India add five runs to their total for a second successive Giles over. England's spinner, though, looks unfazed.

17th over: Wharf enjoys a solid over in the London sunshine, conceding a solitary run.

16th over: Ganguly and Rahul Dravid stab their way to a few more runs off Giles.

15th over: The 50 comes up for India.

14th over: Giles picks up his first wicket when new batsman Virender Sehwag is caught and bowled.
India 48-3 (Sehwag 1)

Ashley Giles joins the fray and a dire Indian mix-up brings up the second wicket. Ganguly calls for a dangerous run and Kaif fails to get off the blocks. With both men stranded at the bowler's end, Kaif is sent back to the pavilion.
India 46-2 (Kaif 2)

13th over: Ganguly is beginning to find his range and clears the mid-off fielder for four.

12th over: Five dot balls and a single for Harmison. A good account from his sixth over.

11th over: Alex Wharf joins the attack. A wide is his only blemish.

10th over: Kaif slashes wildly at the ball but he puts it just out of the reach of Paul Collingwood at backward point. Three runs off the over.

9th over: Ganguly smashes Gough over mid-on for six as he finally turns his frustration into something constructive.

8th over: Harmison smashes out Laxman's stumps with a superb yorker.
India 24-1 (Laxman 9)

7th over: Boundary two of the game comes up, Laxman whipping Gough deftly off his legs past the man at mid-wicket.

6th over: Harmison varies the pace nicely, keeping a frustrated Ganguly under wraps for now.

5th over: England are now giving away the extras too easily. Gough gifts India two more.

4th over: Laxman is mightily lucky to still be at the crease after he nicks Harmison to Geraint Jones. Somehow, the umpire Jeremy Lloyds calls a wide instead - one of three from Harmison's over.

3rd over: Gough enjoys another good over and is a tad unlucky to concede the game's first boundary when Ganguly gets a thick edge.

2nd over: Laxman is lucky to escape with his wicket intact after Michael Vaughan misses the stumps with a run-out opportunity.

1st over: Gough beats Ganguly's bat with his fifth delivery and concedes just one run from his final ball.

1045 BST: Darren Gough opens the bowling for England, while Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman start the batting for India.
