Flintoff led the England charge |
Captain Michael Vaughan praised one of the best one-day displays under his leadership after England secured a 2-0 series win against India. "We don't win that many games batting first so it was a great effort from the lads," Vauughan said.
"We got a great start through Vikram [Solanki] and Tres [Marcus Trescothick].
"We then lost a cluster of four wickets but Fred [Andrew Flintoff] and Colly [Paul Collingwood] batted as well as you can in one-day cricket."
Vaughan could afford to be upbeat despite his own poor run of form.
"When we got out onto the field we put them under pressure with a couple of early wickets and then stuck to our guns," he added. Man-of-the-match Fintoff, who hit 99, said: "I always seem to score runs here and I enjoy batting with Colly.
"I had to get my head down to start with because Harbhajan was spinning it and bouncing it so we had to consolidate for a while but we knew if we stuck around we could play our shots at the death."
Indian captain Sourav Ganguly admitted his team had struck a rough patch in one-day cricket as they slumped at The Oval to trail 2-0 against England.
He said: "Things are not going our way at present. We've not played well in both aspects of the game.
"The spinners did a good job in the middle overs but the batting did not get any momentum at all."
Ganguly added that Sachin Tendulkar was looking increasingly unlikely to return to fitness for the ICC Champions Trophy. He said: "At the moment I'd have to say he is seriously doubtful."
Tendulkar is suffering from tennis elbow and has a fitness test on Sunday.
