| Essex first for Irani Irani's Essex play Warwickshire on Saturday Ronnie Irani was delighted to gain an England recall after a three-year break, but kept his focus firmly on Essex's B&H Cup final date this Saturday. Irani's tremendous form this season saw him secure an all-rounder's berth in England's 15-man squad for the triangular series against Sri Lanka and India. "It's always a nice touch to get back on the international scene and it will be good to get on board again," he said. "But I have got a big game before that at Lord's. After that I will try and win some games for England." Essex continued their dominating one-day form with a C&G Trophy fourth round victory over Lancashire on Wednesday, with Husain leading the way. "Nasser rang me last night and I immediately reminded him that we had a big game against Lancashire and told him to come in focused. "Then he said, `By the way you have been picked for the England set-up'. "I didn't even know the meeting was last night so it was quite a nice touch." Sussex seamer James Kirtley, meanwhile, profits from the side strain suffered by Andy Caddick in the Old Trafford Test to re-start his one-day international career. Darren Gough, who will not be fit for the start of the tournament, is nevertheless named in the squad, while Alex Tudor is rewarded for his success in Manchester.
Several other England men have niggles, including Ashley Giles' stiff back, Paul Collingwood's knee trouble and Graham Thorpe's ankle worry. Kirtley made his one-day debut for England against Zimbabwe last October. He showed plenty of potential, but was reported for having a suspect action and has since been required to have remedial work.
Chairman of selectors David Graveney said Kirtley had done "a lot of remedial work" on his action with Bob Cottam over the winter. "As far as the selectors are concerned, he has been cleared to play by the ECB Bowling Review Group, has performed successfully for Sussex this season, and that is the end of the matter." Graveney went on: "The message that we always send out to county players is - 'If you keep performing - we will look at you.' "We are aware that Jeremy Snape is not currently a first-choice selection for Gloucestershire's one-day side but he made a strong impression during the winter. "And as Ashley Giles has been troubled by a back injury, we need other options in the slow-bowling department." England 15: Nasser Hussain (capt), Paul Collingwood, Andrew Flintoff, Ashley Giles, Darren Gough, Matthew Hoggard, Ronnie Irani, James Kirtley, Nick Knight, Jeremy Snape, Alec Stewart, Graham Thorpe, Marcus Trescothick, Alex Tudor, Michael Vaughan. |
