Moeen Ali set to lead Worcestershire at Edgbaston

Moeen Ali will captain Worcestershire against his old club Warwickshire this week if Daryl Mitchell fails to recover from a side injury.

Mitchell, injured in the CB40 game against Derbyshire, could be out for some weeks, and Worcestershire have no officially appointed vice-captain.

Director of cricket Steve Rhodes told BBC Hereford & Worcester: "This is a learning year for everybody.

"If that means we learn about Moeen as captain then so be it."

Rhodes says they could turn to former captain Vikram Solanki although thinks the club have to look ahead: "I spoke to Vic and I think the best way forward is for Moeen to be given the chance.

"Moeen has Vikram close by to turn to, but we see it as a good opportunity for Moeen."

Mitchell will have a scan to determine the extent of the injury, but Rhodes says the early diagnosis is that he could be out for anything from three to five weeks.
