New Road work on track - Newton

Worcestershire's flooded New Road ground
New Road has again fallen victim to flooding

Worcestershire chief executive Mark Newton says work on the club's new pavilion is still on schedule despite recent flooding at New Road.

Newton told BBC Hereford & Worcester the contractors had allowed time for possible flooding delay.

"We had no work for a week but they've absorbed that into the programme so the ground work is still continuing.

"The most exciting bit will be on 8 December when the steel arrives and the first floor will be put up," he added.

Newton admits that meeting the schedule is dependent on the River Severn remaining within its banks between now and the start of the season.

"We are absolutely on schedule at the moment, but any further floods would cause us a few problems," he said.

"We've asked for as few home games as possible early in the season, but we'll inevitably have to play some.

"We'll make a decision when we know who the opposition is as to whether we'll set up temporary facilities for players at New Road or maybe play the odd game at Kidderminster," he added.

Newton is optimistic the project will come together as planned but says he has been at New Road long enough to know that the best-laid plans are always at the mercy of the weather.

"I'm very confident at the moment, but another flood would probably destroy a little bit of that confidence," he admitted.

"As always we will find our way through it and we will be ready as early as we can next season.

"Of course, we are all very excited about having the new facility."
