New Road flood puzzles Fernando

Worcestershire will hope for a break in the weather so that they can play some cricket against Glamorgan in Cardiff.

The squad headed to Cardiff early to enjoy some indoor practice because New Road is still under flood water.

Director of cricket Steve Rhodes said the flooding came as a bit of a shock to new Worcestershire signing, Sri Lanka bowler Dilhara Fernando.

"I took him to the gym on Sunday and tried to explain what had happened but I'm not too sure he understood."

Fernando is set to make his debut in Cardiff having joined Worcestershire at the end of last week in time to watch the rain fall at Southampton as the Pro-40 game there was called off.

Veteran batsman Graeme Hick will miss the Cardiff game having failed to recover from an elbow injury.

But as Rhodes told BBC Hereford and Worcester, Hick is hoping to be fit for the games against Middlesex at Kidderminster:

"Hicky is struggling but he's well aware the two games at Chester Road will be his last before retiring and is very keen to play in those games."

At least the County players will have a full set of kit to carry on the season, as last year some of the equipment was lost in the floods.

"The staff have been superb," said Rhodes.

"While we were in Southampton they sent for our keys, got all the cars off, and got everything out of the offices, the physio's room and dressing room.

"We have put a lot of stuff in a lock-up and we'll just get on with it, we don't have any choice really."

Worcestershire take a squad of 12 to Cardiff with Matt Mason included but Rhodes says he will only play in an emergency as he is not fully recovered from a shoulder muscle tear.

There will be full ball-by-ball commentary on the game between Glamorgan and Worcestershire on BBC Hereford & Worcester on 738 AM and on line at bbc.co.uk/herefordandworcester.
