Sussex have announced a loss of £171,000 for the year to October 2010.

That compared to the Hove-based side making a surplus of £1,455 in the previous financial year.

Turnover was down by more than £1m to £4.86m from £5.87m in 2009, despite Sussex winning the County Championship Division Two title.

Chief executive Dave Brooks said the football World Cup had impacted on FP t20 gate receipts, with the club losing more than £50,000 for one Friday game.

He said: "Comparing against 2009 is quite difficult. In that season we had the benefit of two home knock-out cup matches, great performances in all three one-day competitions, a trip to India for the inaugural Champions League, and four days of sun-baked cricket against the touring Australians.

"Adjusting for those items, our actual revenues were up around 2% year on year, which we are comfortable with - especially when the impact of the Fifa World Cup is taken into account. On one Friday T20 game alone, this cost the club over £50,000."

Brooks added: "Our squad for 2011 looks strong enough to compete on all three fronts.

"With excellent execution and a fair wind, there is good reason to believe we can generate a healthy surplus in the current year and continue that momentum into coming seasons."
