Davies relishing England call-up

Davies hopes he will get a taste of Test-match action in South Africa

Surrey wicketkeeper Steven Davies says he will be aiming to impress captain Andrew Strauss and coach Andy Flower on England's tour of South Africa.

The former Worcestershire player has been selected as back-up for England's first choice keeper Matt Prior.

The 23-year-old told BBC London 94.9: "It's nice to be involved. I know that I'm going as number two keeper.

"But it's a great chance for me in nets to impress Andrew Strauss and obviously Andy Flower."

Davies is yet to play for Surrey after signing from Worcestershire at the end of last season and he is realistic about his chances of seeing any Test-match action.

"I've had little tasters of it," he said. "I played in the Twenty20 and obviously that semi-final of the Champions Trophy and it's a good place to be. It's a good buzz and it's a big ambition of mine.

"It's nice to be on the full tour but I know it's going to take a lot of hard work from me to play a Test match but if I do, hopefully, I'll take my chance."

Davies feared he would miss out on being picked for the Test squad for the first time.

"It's strange because you always think you'll have a chance but you never expect the call," he said. "When I got it I expected him to say that maybe they weren't going to take me this time but when he told me I was in the Test squad I was absolutely delighted."

Davies is currently training in the UK but will fly out to South Africa on 22 November to train with the England performance squad in Pretoria before joining up with the full squad at the end of the One Day series.

And he is determined to make the most of his opportunity.

"It's amazing to be involved with the full England squad," he added. "It's everything I imagined. You get to see the world, which is nice, you get paid for it and you get to meet some really great people."
