Mark Ramprakash looks certain to end his playing career at Surrey after signing a fresh deal to keep him at The Oval until the end of the 2009 season. Ramprakash, whose fame level moved up several notches last Christmas when he won BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing, will turn 40 at the end of that summer.
Surrey Cricket Manager Alan Butcher said: "I'm delighted to have the best player in the country until 2009.
"His work ethic and insatiable appetite for runs are an inspiration."
Butcher, father of club captain Mark, joked: "The only problem I can foresee will be keeping him out of the salsa clubs during the summer."
Ramprakash's record-breaking season in 2006 helped Surrey gain promotion in the County Championship.
The former England batsman became only the fifth man in the history of first-class cricket in to average of over 100 in a full season.
He scored 2,278 runs on the way to hitting 150 runs or more in five consecutive innings, something never before achieved in any form of cricket.
Ramprakash, who began his career in Middlesex, where he still lives, has scored 87 first-class centuries.
