Somerset signed White in January for his third spell with the county |
Somerset all-rounder Cameron White is not expected to feature in any of his team's FP t20 group games due to a complication over his registration. The county had hoped that the Australian could play in rotation with Kieron Pollard and Murali Kartik as one of two permitted overseas signings. But the England and Wales Cricket Board have now pointed out that registrations are for a minimum of 10 days. And that rules out the match-by-match swapping of players for any county. Former captain White could still feature if Somerset make it to the quarter-finals - or if Kartik or Pollard were to get injured during any of the county's final five group games, staring with this Friday night's home clash with Hampshire. "With so many matches in such a short time frame, it does not provide us with the flexibility to select for each match on a game-by-game basis," said Somerset chief executive Richard Gould. Somerset had been under the impression that this season's enlarged Twenty20 competition had been amended to follow Indian Premier League rules and that counties were permitted to sign up to four overseas players, but play only two per match. "Unfortunately this is not the case," Gould told Somerset's website. "On closer inspection, which has been confirmed by the ECB, the rules state that we can only have two players registered at any one time. "We can swap these registrations over to other players but it has to be for a minimum of 10 days, and with so many games in such a short timeframe this does not provide us the flexibility to select for each match on a case by case basis. "For example, were Cameron to play in place of Murali Kartik, then Kartik would be unable to play for another 10 days." White has hit 593 runs in 16 previous Twenty20 innings for Somerset in his two previous summers at Taunton in 2006 and 2007.
