ICC World Cup Qualifier - Fifth/sixth place play-off, Willowmoore Park: Afghanistan 295-8 (50 overs) beat Scotland 206 (40 overs) by 89 runs
Kyle Coetzer hit 44 in Scotland's innings but could not prevent defeat |
Scotland ended their World Cup qualifying campaign with an 89-run defeat to Afghanistan in the play-off match to decide fifth place. The Afghans made 295-8 in Benoni with Mohammad Nabi (58) and Samiullah Shinwari (52) the main scorers. Though Kyle Coetzer offered stiff resistance with an excellent knock of 44, the Scots were all out for 206. Both teams had just missed out on World Cup qualifications, but the result gave Afghanistan victory in their first ODI. Ireland, Canada, Netherlands and Kenya qualify for the 2011 World Cup, and those four - plus Afghanistan and Scotland - earn ODI status for the next four years. All six have automatic places in the 2009/10 Intercontinental Cup.
