Scotland suffered a batting collapse as they lost their World Cup qualifier against Kenya by 24 runs.

Kenya made 178 in their innings, with John Blain taking 4 for 59 at the Stan Friedman Oval in Krugersdorp.

But in reply the Scots failed to capitalise and were all out for 154 with Jan Stander top scoring with 27.

The defeat means the Scots remain in fifth place, two points behind Kenya with two Super Eight games remaining to secure World Cup qualification.

Scotland lost the toss but Blain's four-wicket haul and Craig Wright (2 for 15), gave them the ideal platform to secure their second win within three days after Saturday's win over Netherlands.

Kenya reached 24 without loss in four overs, but Blain checked their early progress when he removed Kennedy Obuya on 15 and then dismissed Alex Obanda for a duck.

Blain trapped his third victim, Kenya captain Steve Tikolo (four), lbw, two overs later before Wright dismissed opener Morris Ouma (19) in similar fashion with Kenya 49 for four.

Collins Obuya, who top scored for the Africans with 32, and Thomas Odoyo, briefly rallied with a fifth-wicket partnership of 49 but that was broken when Wright had the former caught by Neil McCallum.

Later, Kenya were teetering on the brink on 160 for eight and Nel (2 for 25) wasted little time in cleaning up the tail.

He bowled Lameck Ngoche (seven) and trapped Hiren Varaiya (20) lbw with two balls remaining.

Scotland appeared confident early in their innings, with openers Gavin Hamilton and Majid Haq steering the side to 30 without loss after seven overs.

But three wickets then fell for the addition of just nine runs.

We've got to be a bit stronger at the top with batting and we've got to maintain good discipline with our bowling

Scotland head coach Peter Steindl

Hamilton (17) was bowled by Odoyo in the ninth over before Haq (12) was stumped off the bowling of Ngoche.

Watson's miserable tournament continued when he was out lbw for one as Ngoche struck again.

Wickets continued to tumble and Colin Smith (nine) was next to go when run out by Odoyo before Odhiambo bowled McCallum (10) to leave Scotland deep in trouble on 82 for six.

Stander and Wright began the rescue act by putting on 48 for the seventh wicket but Odhiambo's removal of the latter (23) was decisive.

Top scorer Stander (27) soon followed, undone by Varaiya, and Blain (10) and Moneeb Iqbal (four) were dismissed by the impressive Ngoche to compound Scotland's misery.

Scotland head coach Peter Steindl said the side needed to win their next two games.

"We've got to be a bit stronger at the top with batting and we've got to maintain good discipline with our bowling," he said.

"We'll now be focusing on the next game in two days' time.

"By and large, we did well with the ball in the hand and to keep them under 180 was a pretty fair effort by bowlers.

"It was a difficult wicket to attack on and it was like that all day. The Kenyans worked hard to get their 178."
