Watson and his team-mates were outclassed by New Zealand |
Ryan Watson hopes that Scotland's showing against New Zealand stands his side in good stead despite their eight-wicket defeat at Mannofield. "It will have taken away the awe factor when they play against us again," he told BBC Sport after the harsh lesson. "We've blooded three very young cricketers here in Richie Berrington, Gordon Goudie and Qasim Sheikh. "That's very encouraging. They didn't look out of their depth and we can take a lot of heart from that." There were few genuine positives against the Black Caps for the hosts, New Zealand in no way treating the final game of their British summer as an end of tour wind-down. From the moment Daniel Vettori won the toss, the conditions foretold a triumph for the visitors on their first visit to Scotland for nine years. Watson, suffering personal disappointment after his second duck in as many outings, acknowledged that fate played a decisive hand. "When you're up against a side of the quality of New Zealand, you need a few things to go your way," he said. "Everything went against us. "Obviously losing the toss wasn't ideal. It wasn't ideal that there was a little rain overnight, the wicket greened up a little bit. "We batted in rain for a good 15-16 overs which kept it green. And then they went out to bat in the sun. | MY SPORT: DEBATE |
"They are quite a unit. I don't make excuses. But you do need a few things to go your way to be competitive and they went very much in their favour." Scotland now head for Bermuda next week for an Inter-Continental Cup tie with Canada to follow the week after. New Zealand's players are looking forward to a six-week break until they begin preparations for their scheduled tour of Pakistan. And Ross Taylor, arguably the man of the series in Aberdeen after making an unbeaten 61 against Scotland, was pleased with the final outcome of their stint in the UK. "We struggled in the Test matches against England but we fought back to win the one-day series 3-1," said Taylor. "We came here and were expected to win. But we wanted to put on a professional performance. And we?re happy we did that."
