Kyle McCallan hopes for a better performance against the hosts |
Ireland captain Kyle McCallan admitted his side were embarrassed by their world record 290-run defeat to New Zealand in Aberdeen. McCallan refused to blame the teams inexperience for the reverse in the opening Lloyds TSB Tri-Series tie. "We just sat back - we were off the pedal from ball one. We've spoken about the warm-up this morning. That set the tone," he said. "There was no energy there and it was hard to pull back once they got going." The Irish now face Scotland on Wednesday looking to salvage some pride. "There are a lot of very hurt players and we have now got one opportunity to put things right and there are no excuses," McCallan added. | 606: DEBATE |
"You can say that New Zealand are one of the top sides. They've just come off a (England) series. They're professional. We don't have that excuse tomorrow." Brendon McCullum's 166 off 135 balls was the key factor in Ireland's demise as the Black Caps' opener accrued his maiden ODI century. The Kiwis, who close their tour against Scotland on Thursday, showed no mercy to the Irish attack despite setting an impossible target of 403. "It's a mark of a good side to be able to turn both elements on and that's what we did," McCullum said. "The bowlers were pretty hungry to do well and get some stats behind them."
