Lloyds TSB Tri-Series: Scotland v New Zealand Date: Thu 3 July Start: 1045 BST Venue: Mannofield, Aberdeen Coverage: Full commentary on BBC Radio Scotland MW and on BBC Sport website Smith is hoping to avoid disappointment against New Zealand |
Scotland wicket-keeper Colin Smith insists his side will not fear New Zealand as the Black Caps bid to end their tour on a winning note. The Saltires watched the Kiwis inflict a mammoth 290 run defeat on Ireland on Tuesday with Brendon McCullum and James Marshall both breaking 150. But Smith said: "You can go into your shell but you'll not win a game playing like that. You have to go out there believing you can take them on, and that it's your day." Warwickshire's Navdeep Poonia comes into the Scotland line-up after missing Wednesday's tie with Ireland. And that will boost the hosts' top order as they try to accomplish something they have never achieved before - a victory over a Test nation. Aberdeenshire star Smith, who knows this ground better than most, is wary of New Zealand's potential, having watched their performances in the NatWest Series against England. However, despite the ten places which separate the sides in the ODI rankings, there is no reason, he said, for the Scots not to go out and produce a confident performance. | MY SPORT: DEBATE |
"We have nothing to lose," Smith declared. "They're number three in the world and you can see from their performances in the last few World Cups, with being semi-finallists, that they belong there. It's as tough a challenge as playing Australia or South Africa, that's for sure." However New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori admits his team want to avoid a loss ahead of their long journey home. "These are one day internationals. If we win this one, it will be five in a row and we'll have ended the tour on an extreme high. "There'll be no complacency. We've set the bar pretty high with our performance (against Ireland) and there'll be a couple of other guys getting a chance." Marshall will drop out to be replaced by Scott Styris.
