Scotland plot Twenty20 surprise
Scotland cricket captain Ryan Watson

Captain Ryan Watson believes Scotland are capable of causing an upset at the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 tournament in South Africa.

Scotland start against Pakistan on 12 September and face a tough match against India the following day.

And Watson told BBC Sport: "Pakistan are a brilliant side on their day but they have off days as well.

"India are the same, so, if we get it right and they get it wrong in such a short version, anything can happen."

Scotland did not fare well at this year's 50-over World Cup, losing heavily in all three of their group games.

But Watson has higher hopes for the shorter game format, with the Scots based in Durban.

"Preparation hasn't been ideal," Watson revealed. "A lot of the guys have been busy with work commitments.

"But we are all excited and looking forward to the challenge."

Scotland are new to the Twenty20 game but Watson pointed out that India and Pakistan had limited experience.

And he said: "Due to the Scottish weather, we have been involved in a lot of shortened games and we've done well under those circumstances.

"And I think the shorter game should always suit the underdog."

Scotland entertained India in Glasgow last month and turned in a decent performance, making 203-9 before losing a rain-hit match by seven wickets.

"India are one of the top sides in the world but we did well against them and showed them we can play a bit.

"We can take confidence from that into the tournament."

The games in South Africa will come thick and fast, with the competition lasting just 13 days.

And Watson does not take issue with playing two games in two days.

"We will play less overs than in an ODI, so, from a physical point of view, it's not a problem," he added.

"If you lose, I suppose it's nice to get straight back out there without too much time to dwell on it.

"And, if we win, we'll just want to get on with it.

"I think the organisers have learned a lot from the World Cup and the condensed format is to everyone's favour."
