Nottinghamshire chief Mick Newell sees open title race

Mick Newell
Newell's side have won five Championship games this season

Notts director of cricket Mick Newell believes any one of six teams can win the County Championship this season.

After a 10-wicket defeat at Somerset, Nottinghamshire trail leaders Yorkshire by a point with a game in hand.

Notts and Yorkshire still have to face each other twice - the first game begins at Headingley on Tuesday.

Newell told BBC Radio Nottingham: "People keep saying it's Notts or Yorkshire but five teams can win it, maybe six."

Only 44 points now separate the top six sides, Yorkshire, Notts, Somerset, Lancashire, Essex and Durham.

"I don't really see this Notts-Yorkshire thing at all," added Newell.

"It's a big game for us to play Yorkshire, we want to win the game and they will want to win the game.

"But the winner of that game won't necessarily win the Championship.

"I think Somerset are right in the mix now and I am sure Durham and Lancashire will still think they can win it as well."
