COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Taunton: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY THREE: Somerset 517 & 13-0 beat Notts 339 & 190 by 10 wickets Somerset 24pts, Notts 5pts Match scorecard
Thomas took six wickets in the match |
Nottinghamshire were powerless to resist Alfonso Thomas as the seamer bowled Somerset to a 10-wicket win. Samit Patel converted his overnight 92 into a century but fell four runs later, quickly joining his captain Chris Read back in the pavilion. Notts soon subsided to 339 all out and were invited to follow on. Things worsened as they were bundled out again for 190 with Thomas taking five for 40. Marcus Trescothick and Nick Compton scored the required runs in 13 balls. The win is Somerset's fourth in five County Championship matches. Read began the day with a boundary in the first over he faced but was soon out caught by wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter off the bowling of Charl Willoughby, who took 101 for six in the first innings. With Patel shortly following his skipper, Notts found themselves in trouble as the final three wickets fell for just 42 runs. Having followed on, Notts' prospects got no better as Murali Kartik (2-64) and Willoughby made short work of the top order before Thomas got stuck into the middle order. Mark Wagh (45) and Ali Brown (47) offered some resistance before the visitors were all out for 190, leading by just 12 runs, a score that was quickly knocked off by Somerset.
