Newman once scored a century and a double century in the same match |
Surrey opener Scott Newman has joined Nottinghamshire on loan for an initial one-month period. The 29-year-old left-hander, who has played 93 first-class matches, will be available for selection in next week's Championship match at Somerset. Notts director of cricket Mike Newell said: "It's been evident for a while now that the contributions of our openers haven't been good enough. "If Scott's loan spell is successful then we'll look to extend it." Newman, who began this season by scoring 124 in Surrey's Championship match with Derbyshire in April, has a first-class batting average of 41.80. | Having a new arrival can freshen things up Notts director of cricket Mike Newell on Scott Newman |
"He'll play for our second team this week," said Newell. "And we'll assess whether or not he comes into the team to face Somerset after that. "We've been very patient with our opening batsmen for the past year and a half but this arrangement gives us an opportunity to have a close look at an experienced player. "Having a new arrival can freshen things up and it's up to the players in our squad to react to it and earn a place on merit."
