Newell is pessimistic about his side's chances of progressing in the T20 Cup
Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell has praised batsman Matt Wood after his knock of 45 helped Notts defeat Yorkshire in the Twenty20 Cup.
Wood was helped by Ali Brown (66) as the Outlaws recorded an 11-run victory.
Newell told BBC Radio Nottingham: "Matthew hit the ball very sweetly and we look forward to seeing him do that again on Wednesday.
"He's a calm lad, very placid, but he's quite determined and he's made the most of his chance."
Newell was also pleased to see Ali Brown record his best score in Twenty20 cricket this season.
He said: "Alistair Brown's been hitting the ball sweetly in four-day cricket and he took that into tonight."
Notts are fourth in the North Division, four points behind third-placed Yorkshire, and Newell does not believe his side can get beyond the group stages.
"I think we realistically can't get through to the quarter-finals because I don't think the best third-placed team is going to be in our group," he said.
