Newell's side have won just one Twenty20 game this season |
Nottinghamshire coach Mick Newell has urged his side to end their Twenty20 campaign with four wins, to qualify for the top division of next season's P20. Notts prop up the North Division with one win from their first six matches, but need to finish at least third to be amongst the elite next year. Newell told BBC Radio Nottingham: "It'll be financially beneficial to be playing in the first division. "If we win all four games we can still achieve that." The P20 will run separate to the domestic Twenty20 Cup, and clubs will be allowed to field a number of overseas players. The new tournament will also determine qualification for the Champions League, involving club sides around the world. | We've got no greater motivation than having four home games in front of the Trent Bridge crowd |
Newell added: "From what I understand, the first division is going to be much more high profile than the second division. "Possibly more TV coverage, more incentive to get overseas players in, and to attract the overseas investment. "The overseas television companies might want to cover that if there are, for example, Indian players playing in that division." Nottinghamshire's only Twenty20 victory came at the home of their local-rivals Derbyshire, but they have suffered defeats home and away to Durham, and at Lancashire, Leicestershire and Yorkshire. Notts will end their campaign with four home games, after they were restricted to just one home game in the first half of the tournament, due to Trent Bridge being prepared for the World Twenty20. | Remaining Twenty20 fixtures Mon 22 June - Yorkshire Wed 24 June - Leicestershire Fri 26 June - Derbyshire Sun 28 June - Lancashire |
Notts captain Chris Read said: "There has to be a feeling amongst the lads that we really want to turn this white ball season around, because it has been disappointing. "We've got no greater motivation than having four home games in front of the Trent Bridge crowd. "We've been away from there for a month, so we're looking forward to getting back there and putting in some decent performances."
