Sehwag is likely to be required by India for the Asia Cup in June |
Northants chief executive Mark Tagg has admitted his relief at receiving clearance to have Virender Sehwag available for their Twenty20 campaign. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has granted the club a 'no objection certificate' for Sehwag. But it contains the standard clause that the batsman will still be expected to play for India if selected. "The fact he's likely to miss a few of our games is just par for the course," Tagg told BBC Radio Northampton. "To get a cricketer of his calibre - an Indian superstar - is a massive coup for a county like us. "Yes, it's disappointing that we'll lose him for a few dates. But the overall impact is a huge benefit to the club. | 606: DEBATE |
"We had a supporters' lunch at the County Ground and when I told them he was definitely coming there was a loud cheer! "People are really excited about it," Tagg added. Northants announced the signing of the 31-year-old earlier this month, but it was feared two international tournaments during the English season could severely restrict his availability. The club believes Sehwag is likely to be required for the Asia Cup between 15 and 25 June but may not be selected for an earlier triangular tournament in Zimbabwe. Northants begin their build-up to the new season with a one-day friendly against Glamorgan at Northampton on Monday, 29 March.
