Harvey played 73 one-day internationals for Australia |
Northants have signed Australian all-rounder Ian Harvey for this season's Twenty20 Cup competition. The 37-year-old one-day specialist is set to make his debut for the Steelbacks against the Warwickshire Bears at Northampton on Monday. "I'm excited about this opportunity to return to Twenty20 cricket, where I still feel I have a lot to offer as a player," Harvey said. "I'll also be passing on my experience to the talented youngsters here." Northants have turned to Harvey, who has had spells with four other counties, following injuries to several key players including David Sales, Steven Crook and Stephen Peters. They will also lose wicketkeeper Niall O'Brien for three matches as he joins Ireland's squad for the ICC World Twenty20 tournament next month. "We've been fortunate to secure Ian's services," added head coach David Capel. "His proven track record shows he has been one of the outstanding performers in Twenty20 since its inception. "Our younger players have a great opportunity to learn from him. "This signing obviously strengthens our squad and will improve competitiveness in all areas, especially as Twenty20 is becoming so important to the players, the club and our supporters."
