Willey hit a half century on his first class debut against Leicestershire |
David Willey, son of former Northants player Peter, has signed a two-year professional contract with the county. The 18-year-old all-rounder, a former Academy player, impressed in pre-season and has carried his good form into the early season games. Northants coach David Capel said: "He has shown the aptitude and attitude. This contract is fully deserved. "In him, I see the potential to go forward and enjoy a full and successful career with Northants cricket." Capel added: "It is especially pleasing to witness David's emergence through the age groups through to first-class cricket." Willey, whose father also played for Leicestershire and England, before becoming a Test umpire, said: "I am delighted to be playing first class cricket and to be offered a contract. "It has taken a lot of hard work, effort and commitment to get to this point and I'd like to thank Northants, Old Northamptonians and close friends and family for their time and support. "I realise the work that is ahead but I hope this can be the start of many successful years with Northants."
