Mahmood has taken 59 wickets from 52 Twenty20 first class matches

Lancashire's Sajid Mahmood has joined Western Australia for their domestic Twenty20 competition.

The 28-year-old fast bowler replaces Kemar Roach after the West Indian had to return to the Caribbean.

Mahmood, who has played four T20 internationals for England, is also a big-hitting lower-order batsman.

WA coach Mickey Arthur said: "He is a genuine strike bowler and a capable batter who hits the ball a long way, so he offers us the complete package."

The Lancashire player will be one of Western Australia's two overseas players in the competition, the other being former West Indies captain Chris Gayle.

Mahmood told the club website: "Playing state cricket out in Australia is going to be a fairly big thing for me. I've never played for a first-class team abroad, so it's going to be a new challenge.

"Going over there as an overseas player will be a different pressure. Hopefully I'll grow as a person and as a cricketer."

The series involves all six Australian states and runs from 30 December until 5 February.
