Stanley Park has not hosted a first-class fixture since August 2008
Lancashire chief executive Jim Cumbes says Blackpool's Stanley Park has a future hosting county games despite missing out to Liverpool in 2010. Aigburth has been chosen to stage two fixtures in late August/early September leaving Blackpool without a first-class game for the second year running. Cumbes told BBC Radio Lancashire: "That is not to say Blackpool is off the list but Liverpool are in pole position. "They have a big ground in very good condition and attendances are good." Lancashire will again host Hampshire at Aigburth in the County Championship starting on Tuesday, 31 August. That is followed by an ECB 40 League fixture on Saturday, 4 September against Worcestershire. "The two games are so close together that they were always going to be played at the same venue," added Cumbes. | If and when we re-orientate our cricket square... some of, if not all of, our four-day games will be played away from Old Trafford Lancashire chief executive Jim Cumbes |
"It's been clear in recent years that Liverpool have gone to the top of the list in terms of our outgrounds." Blackpool's cause was not helped by events at their last first-class fixture in August 2008 when all four days of the Championship match between Lancashire and Surrey were washed out. "There was a good deal of disappointment last year when the game was called off," said Cumbes. "We felt a lot of things had deteriorated, which we did advise them of, and hopefully they'll be addressing those things. Clearly there has been a problem with the outfield and the drainage which manifested itself last time." Cumbes confirmed that Stanley Park will be one of several outgrounds in contention to host Championship fixtures in 2011 when Old Trafford undergoes major redevelopment. "If and when we re-orientate our cricket square, which is all tied up in our planning application, then some of, if not all of, our four-day games will be played away from Old Trafford so all our outgrounds come into focus then," added Cumbes. "It won't just be Liverpool, it'll be Blackpool, possibly Lytham and the new ground at Westhoughton (The Hoskers)."
