Matt Merchant has continued the legacy established by Peter Marron |
Lancashire's Matthew Merchant has been named the England and Wales Cricket Board's groundsman of the year. He wins the award in his first season as head groundsman at Old Trafford following 19 years on the staff under former winner, Peter Marron. Merchant said: "The award recognises the long hours the entire groundstaff team put in over the winter and during a very wet and trying summer. "Old Trafford has an excellent reputation for delivering wickets." Lancashire head coach Peter Moores said: "Throughout the entire season Matt got the balance right between bat and ball. "And, in a season which was heavily affected by rain, the groundstaff worked tirelessly during fixtures to get as much cricket played as possible - something which was appreciated by all teams concerned."
