Smith has played for England Under-19s

Lancashire all-rounder Tom Smith has been ruled out of action for up to six weeks after straining his side.

The 23-year-old sustained the injury on his right side while bowling in the warm-up ahead of Lancashire's Championship game at Chester-le-Street.

It is a blow for Smith who has been in promising form with Twenty20 batting catching the eye, including 57 not out in the most recent win against Durham.

However, his Championship average is a disappointing eight and-a-half.
