Matt Coles has extended his contract with Kent, tieing the young all-rounder to Canterbury until 2013.

Coles, 20, enjoyed a promising 2010 season, scoring 378 runs and taking 27 wickets in 14 first-class matches.

"Matt made great strides last year and moved his game on nicely, showing a real desire to play for Kent," said Kent director of cricket Paul Farbrace.

"I think the supporters enjoyed seeing him give nothing less than 100% in every match last summer."

Kent chairman of cricket Graham Johnson believes that Coles delivered more than was expected of him and demonstrated his huge potential.

"We want to make sure he maximises this potential and that he enjoys his journey with us," said Johnson.

"He has the ability and approach that will endear him to Kent supporters, who can watch his development over the next three years and beyond."

Kent were relegated from Division One on the final day of the County Championship season in 2010.

But captain Robert Key believes that young players like Coles, Sam Northeast and Alex Blake could come through quicker playing in Division Two.
