Tredwell knows it will be hard to replace Swann as first choice spinner |
Kent off-spinner James Tredwell hopes he impressed England selectors enough on his debut to get another chance at Test level. Tredwell, 28, took six wickets in the second Test in Bangladesh last week. "Hopefully I did myself justice in that match and the one-dayer beforehand, and hopefully the faith will stay with me," Tredwell told BBC South East Today. "But I guess that's down to me. If I perform well at the start of the season then I'm putting myself out there." But former England captain Michael Vaughan told BBC Radio Kent that Tredwell is unlikely to feature in the home Tests this summer unless something happens to England's number one spinner, Graeme Swann. | It was a very proud moment, not just for myself but for friends and family who have helped me along the way |
"He's basically waiting on Graeme Swann getting an injury or England resting Swann, which I don't really see in the Test match arena. "Maybe in a few of the one-dayers, they may give Graeme a little bit of a rest - we need to keep him fit and fresh for the Ashes later on in the year. "But we do know now that James Tredwell is a decent campaigner. He's experienced, he can offer a little bit of flight and variation of pace. He's got a good cricket brain on him and can bat as well. "So we've got a decent understudy to Graeme Swann if the worst happens. "James has done well, he's been around a while and he's got his rewards because he's worked very hard and he deserves a lot of credit." Whatever else this year may hold for Tredwell, he says he will never forget winning his first cap. "It was a very proud moment, not just for myself but for friends and family who have helped me along the way," he said. "I received my cap from [former England captain] Mike Atherton, so that was a very proud moment in itself."
